Installation bug…

Postby samroud » Tue Feb 07, 2012 8:08 pm

HI,

I can't install owncloud on my web server… this message is coming:
Data directory (/home/www/web/cloud/data) not writable by ownCloud
Permissions can usually be fixed by giving the webserver write access to the ownCloud directory

And when I change the permission in 777:
Data directory (/home/www/df7959b4080b924822fea53201a964d4/web/cloud/data) is readable for other users
Please change the permissions to 0770 so that the directory cannot be listed by other users.

And with permission 0770:
Data directory (/home/www/df7959b4080b924822fea53201a964d4/web/cloud/data) not writable by ownCloud
Permissions can usually be fixed by giving the webserver write access to the ownCloud directory

What can I do?

Thanks,
Sam

You probably have uploaded the stuff with your FTP account (we assume that its name is ftpuser), but your server (and therewith owncloud) is running as the user www-data (thats the default one for Debian/Apache). You have to change the owner to the user the server is running as:

chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/owncloud/*

Change the username the server is running as and your directory to the owncloud installation accordingly.

thats not code its a console command to enter into your server. You need to change the owner and permissions for the files you uploaded to make sure that the apache service can access them.

That command allows you to do just that.

Here is a basic tutorial on the chown command: http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl1_chown.htm

If this is the case you shouldn't have these problems...I suggest you ask your provider for help then :)

I installed owncloud on fedora.

On fedora user/group www-data/www-data don't exist.

The user/group by default in httpd.conf are apache/apache

so I did:
chown -R apache:apche owncloud/

but I still get the message:

Data directory (/var/www/html/owncloud/data) not writable by ownCloud
Permissions can usually be fixed by giving the webserver write access to the ownCloud directory

in linux

1. sudo -i
2. cd /var/www/ (folder of owncloud)
3.run command in terminal ==> chown -R www-data.www-data data
