The fix seems to work for me (~35G of pictures in my collection).

Fixed in 4.0.2! Now all folders are scanned. It seems to me that the he selection of a "gallery root" was removed, though (I see no "Settings" button in the gallery, in fact no buttons at all on the top right)...
Thumbnails are generated on-the-fly it seems, the first time a folder is opened. Altogether, not a bad solution, I like it!
