Questions about sharing

Postby tonyb » Fri May 18, 2012 3:42 pm

We want to use OC purely as a web-based file-sharing resource. We will not be using any sync agents, and the only Apps we'll be using are; Import/Export, Dependencies Info and Share Files.

We also want to be able to share files between specific users, which I've worked out I can do via groups, but have a couple of questions about this if possible.

First, the 'Share Files' option seems to be global for all users on the system once enabled. I can't find a way to only allow file sharing for specific users or groups. Is there a way to do this, or is it on a future roadmap?

There doesn't seem to be a way of deleting groups once created. Is this right?

Lastly, when file sharing is enabled between multiple users in a group, is it possible to restrict some of those users read-only access to the shared data?

Well, you can share to a group:

Go to user administration and create some groups by editing the users and adding groups.

Once you have done so, you go back to your files, and you can share files to groups you are in as well.

For that reason I made a central "share user" that is a member of all groups and there I just assigned groups to different folders.

I have a similar problem, that I can share my folders just to the Admin group. I have another User created with the groupname Users. In the selection box I can only choose the Admin group, Users is missing.

What's the problem?

the user that wants to share something to group "A" also has to be a member of group "A".

Then another user must exist in group "A" otherwise it can't be shared to that group.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have worked out how to share to a group, and it works well, but two problems still exist;

1. Turning on sharing is a global thing. All users on the system then have the ability to share. I cannot restrict sharing to nominated users/groups apparently.

2. Having a central 'share' user sounds ok, but in my case each user accessing the shared data needs to be unique, and only one of them needs write access to the data. All others should be able to read the shared data only. I don't think OC has this level of granular security from what I can tell, but I'm happy to be corrected.

Doesn't look like I'm going to get the answers I'd like for these questions, but thanks to people who replied.

I have one further question. If you delete a user account of someone who still has files on the OC server, it looks like the files and the user folder themselves are not deleted. Can someone confirm is this is by design?

That is too bad. Supplying info to a e.g. admin group should not require the right to read all other files of that group.
