How to enable logging for desktop client

Postby rakekniven » Sun Nov 25, 2012 8:16 pm

If you encounter problems with your desktop client, it is very helpful to get log messages.

In a running client
When your client is running and you want to view current activities, you can open the log window by opening the "Settings" dialog, and then pressing F12.

If something during the startup of the client needs to be checked, then alternatively start the client with command line options to show the log:

Windows
  1. Get to "Start > Programs > Owncloud" and right-click on owncloud icon. Select "Send To > Desktop (Create Shortcut".
  2. Right click on the newly appearing owncloud icon on desktop and select "Properties".
  3. Select "Target" value in appearing dialog and append following text

    Code: Select all

     --logwindow
  4. Now start owncloud by double clicking new desktop icon

Tested on XP (32-bit) SP3; Win 7 (64-bit) SP1

Linux
Open "Terminal" and type following command, press Enter:

Code: Select all

owncloud --logwindow

Tested under Ubuntu Linux

Mac OS X
Open "Terminal" and type following command:

Code: Select all

/Applications/owncloud.app/Contents/MacOS/owncloud --logwindow

Tested on Mac OS X 10.8.2 (64-bit)

Log File

In addition, you can tell the desktop client to output the log to a file. For that, add the --logfile option to the command/shortcut you use to run the client, for example:

Code: Select all

owncloud --logfile <logfilepathandname>

Replace <logfilepathandname> suitable to your system.

Linux
need info

Linux (Tested under Ubuntu Linux)
Open "Terminal" and type following command, press Enter:

Code: Select all

owncloud --logwindow

Or to launch the desktop application, along with the logwindow, and output the log to a file, type the following command and press Enter:

Code: Select all

owncloud --logwindow --logfile OwnCloud_Log_Ouput
Of course the 'OwnCloud_Log_Output' file name can be any name you want.

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files (x86)\ownCloud\owncloud.exe" --logwindow --logfile c:\temp\OCclient.log

It's also working on Windows.

For sure it is working on windows this way :-)
But for most win users it is a huge step to start cmd and continue from there ;)

btw. location of owncloud differs from os version to another e.g. win xp has no "(x86)" folder.

I might add that I wanted to do this on Windows startup. I had to find it in the registry. It wasn't in HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run - which is where MSConfig said it should be.

Instead, it was under the user profile (I ran a registry search for "owncloud" then F3'd until I found it at):
HKUsers/{my AD string}/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

Editing the string to match what everyone else listed made it work on startup.

Different issue AFAICS. You talk about automatic start of the client while starting windows.
