Unable to view shared video

Using the iphone app, I have uploaded a video captured on an iphone. I have shared a link to the video but when myself or others that use an iphone click the link, it does not play the video. It opens an owncloud webpage with a black box where the video is and an icon that is a 'play' icon with a cross through it.

I am running v6 on windows server 2008. I have installed codecs and a media player on the server but it made no difference

the link works when viewing the same link on a PC.

Hi,

if it is working on your PC but not on your iphone the device probably is just missing the needed codec to play this video?

Thanks for the reply. The video was captured using the same phone i'm trying to play it on. If i play the video saved on the iphone, it plays fine just not from the owncloud link

Hi,

i'm not familiar with all that codec stuff but if you're using an media player app at your phone and it plays the video correctly it doesn't mean that your webbrowser on your phone is capable to play that video.

I'm not doing anything too unusual though. Has anyone else come across this issue?

All i'm doing is:
1. capturing a video with my iphone
2. uploading using the owncloud iphone app
3. sharing a link via sms to another iphone
4. clicking the link and viewing in the standard browser.

Surely this should work?

As Rancor said, your browser probably doesn't have the capability to play the video. Try downloading the video to the phone and then play it on the phone.

I just took a small video, uploaded it to owncloud and the watched it with the same iphone. No problems. I didn't try the sharing option.

I can confirm this issue in Owncloud 7. Playing on regular computer in Google Chrome, Firefox, w/e Browser you want, it'll freeze the page until its finished loading (does for me anyway) and downloads the file instead. Player does nothing and is exactly how the user who started this thread described it.

I can confirm this, I have mp4 files that do not play on an IPhone, I tried an Iphone 5 and 6, using chrome and safari nothing works. These same video links play perfectly fine on a number of Android phones on a variety of web browsers including Amazon's silk browser. The videos even play fine using safari on an apple computer, it appears to be strictly an IPhone issue to me.
Also I've noticed the playback is very poor when used on the desktop version of Chrome compared to IE or Firefox.

It was like this in OC7 and still is in OC8.

What's the point of having an iOS app if ownCloud cannot play publicly shared videos uploaded from iPhones and iPads???

Those videos are H.264 and have a mov file extension.

Upload those videos to your server, and use a web site mit HTML5 video tags and they will play in any browser that supports them (iOS browsers, Safari, Chrome...).

I hope one day I will be able to share videos too (via public link) that I uploaded from my iPhone. But this request has been around for a long time and nothing has changed. It is not a priority it seems. Too bad.
