Sync problems causing hundreds of conflict copies

Postby yoda » Wed May 23, 2012 2:08 pm

Hi there.

I would be glad if you could help me investigate a really big problem: First of all I'd like to know if anyone has the same issue (so I can report it as a bug) and secondly I hope to find out where the problem lies to help the developers fix the issue.

My Setup:
Server: Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS, apache 2.2.22-1ubuntu, PHP 5.3.10-1ubuntu, mysql-server 5.5.22-0ubuntu
ownCloud: Version 4.0, https, no directory (installed in web root)
Sync Client: Version 1.0.2, running on Win7 x64

I upgraded my server from oC 3.0.3 to oC 4.0 (successfully, after a few hickups) and started my sync client. Everything seemed to be fine until I had a look at the server files.

In the directory /data/<username>/files/<syncfolder> were hundreds of files with "_conflict-<DATETIME>" multiple times in the file name. My collection had grown from 200 MB to 38 GB in the meantime. I stopped the server to investigate and found out that in some file names the special characters (umlauts) were UTF-8 encoded and some not (e.g. ü --> ü). I deleted everything, made a clean setup of the sync client and the oC4 software (with data and config folder preserved) but the issue still persists. I had a look at the files and some didn't even have special characters in them. Maybe also white spaces trigger this behavior.

Another user of this oC instance also syncs files with the server. He did not have any trouble so I had a look at his files. They all do not contain any white spaces or umlauts.

I will investigate further but would like to see if anyone else faces this problem.

Besides: With oC3.0.3 everything (well, mostly) worked fine.

Ok, I dug into this a little further.

The Problem seems to arise when e.g. deleting a file. You could also say I can't delete files on the client side. They get restored at every sync. BUT there is something special when this file has umlauts (or possibly other special characters).

Steps to reproduce:
  • set up a sync between a local folder and a folder in your owncloud
  • let the sync run and settle
  • create two files in the local folder, one named "müsli.txt" and one "test.txt"
  • wait for the sync to complete
  • delete these two files
  • wait and see how both files are recreated and after some time the müsli.txt gets lots of conflicts
This is what I get after 2 minutes:

Code: Select all

-rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data     0 Mai 23 16:04 müsli_conflict-20120523-160515_conflict-20120523-160524_conflict-20120523-160531_conflict-20120523-160539_conflict-20120523-160546_conflict-20120523-160558.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data     0 Mai 23 16:05 müsli_conflict-20120523-160515_conflict-20120523-160524_conflict-20120523-160531_conflict-20120523-160539_conflict-20120523-160546.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data     0 Mai 23 16:05 müsli_conflict-20120523-160515_conflict-20120523-160524_conflict-20120523-160531_conflict-20120523-160539.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data     0 Mai 23 16:05 müsli_conflict-20120523-160515_conflict-20120523-160524_conflict-20120523-160531.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data     0 Mai 23 16:05 müsli_conflict-20120523-160515_conflict-20120523-160524.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data     0 Mai 23 16:05 müsli_conflict-20120523-160515.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data     0 Mai 23 16:05 müsli.txt

It only stops if you delete these files on the client and server side (command line!) while the sync client is stopped. If you delete the files only on the server side they get recreated again when syncing.

I had a look into the web interface and my conflicted file is listed several times. I am not able to delete these files. In Opera, latest stable version, they just stay there, in iex they disappear (with the in opera omitted undo-label) but are there again when navigating somewhere else and coming back.

Can anyone confirm this behavior?

I'm also having this issue.
It's not just while deleting files, I have it when overwriting files. If I update any file in my owncloud sync this file spawns conflict files, new ones just keep being created.

I have a csync lock file issue - viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2269 and I've linked my /var/www/owncloud/data-folder to /home as I had virtually no space in /. Possibly any of these has something to do with this issue.

server:
Debian 6.0, linux 2.6.39.4-11, ARM-based 1.2 GHz, 512Mb ram. (Ecito B3 - http://www.excito.com/content/specifications-excito-b3)

I love reading that I'm not the only one!

Well I have done none of that.

But I found out that other users on the very same server do not have this problem so I thought it might be sync client related. I tried reinstalling and stuff, but no help. A friend of mine, syncing with the same server, does not have this issue (same OS, same OC sync client version). Weird. Maybe you could try this on another machine and see if it works out?

I have the same problem, fresh install with oc 4.02 and sync client windows with shared folders.

I create a folder a share it with a group

When I create a new word document it appears in share.
But when the other user open modify and save it, it creates a conflict doc
When I modify the document it don't create a conflict. Only if modified by other user

I just made a new test with owncloud client 1.03
Same problem with a docx document (ms word)
I try with a xlsx document (excel) and I can see that there is no problem with excel.

Problem are only for the moment with msword. I can see that document and his temp file ~document.docx are present.
The problem is probably here

Perhaps you can post a bug report about that here :
http://bugs.owncloud.org/thebuggenie/

The dev can correct the bug more quickly

I am also having the same (big) issues :-/
I have a copy of a local folder on a remote server and I wanted to sync them so I :
- installed owncloud 4.0.3 on the remote server
- synced remote server and local machine with a common NTP server.
- installed and configured oc client 1.0.3

After starting the client, my local folder got bigger and bigger as new *_conflict-* files were created. conflict files are or various types: .png, .jpg, .xml... you name it. The _conflict- files seem to always be valid copies of the 'original' file.

Adding the -logile parameter to the oc client executable does not seem to produce any log file (not in the installation folder at least). Opening the log window from the client menu always ends up freezing (not responding) and eventually crashing...
My local and original folder is a real mess now and It has grown out of proportion :-(

When are the *_conflict-* files created? This is a SERIOUS problem.
I don't understand how owncloud claims to be "production-ready" with this kind of problems?

Any help/answer would be very appreciated.

I have filed a bug report here: http://bugs.owncloud.org/thebuggenie/ow ... es/oc-1172

----- Here is my setup -----
- owncloud 4.0.3 running on Ubuntu Desktop 12
- oc client running on Windows 8 CR x64

I've had this issue many times. I have two windows 7 clients syncing the same folders. What I normally do is stop syncing both machines, make sure the data on the server is true and up to date. Then I delete any conflicts on the server. I delete all the data on the clients including the csync dbs and restart the clients.

It's a pain but it works. Definitely not a long term solution.
