HowTo: Share your media folder using OC

Postby Legenbaer » Sun Oct 25, 2015 6:48 pm

Hi guys,

while OwnCloud is a good solution to create your own cloud space, it is not the first choice if you want to share a data folder with friends. Especially if this folder is an external data source that is not part of the cloud. However, I want to show you a method to share such a folder with this small HowTo.

1.) The main idea is that an external source can easily be linked to your own account by using the symbolic links of linux. You can create a link to the target folder by using the ln command:

Code: Select all

 ln -s target_path link_path

Copy this link to your account data folder. The linked folder will now appear as an real folder in your account.

2.) Create new accounts for different user types (with or without the ability to change the data).

3.) Share the linked folder with these users.

Hi,

i'm not quite sure if this is really recommended. If you're linking stuff into your data directory you should notice:

ownCloud’s file scanner does not follow symlinks, which could lead to infinite loops. To avoid this do not use soft or hard links in your ownCloud data directory.

Furthermore modification of stuff within the data dir (e.g. if someone is changing something within a folder linked via a symlink) is also not supported:

The data directory on the server is exclusive to ownCloud and must not be modified manually

Yeah, you're right! This "hack" is unorthodox. Nevertheless, to me it is an alternative to setting up an FTP server to serve such data. But maybe i've overlooked the right solution?

Hi,

you can use the external storage app with the local mount option as described here:

https://doc.owncloud.org/server/8.2/adm ... local.html

There oC is expecting changed files.
